How To Set Up Win95 For FS5 Use

by Dan Pursel

Not to rain on the parade of folks who like to run DOS sims in DOS, but I prefer running from Win95 - it's not TOO hard to set up, and memory management, joysticks, sound, etc. are handled by Win95 32bit drivers. Here we go:

  • Locate the FS5.COM executable file in an Explorer window (C:\FLTSIM5\FS5.COM)
  • Left click and drag exe to the desktop to make a shortcut.
  • Make a flightsim folder.
  • Drag the shortcut into the sim folder (get cute with a new icon/title if you want). Dragging directly to a folder WILL NOT WORK (explanation too long).
  • Right click shortcut in folder to bring up menu, left click properties.
  • Click programs tab, should look like this (or where you loaded FS5): C:\FLTSIM5\FS5.COM (make sure working directory is C:\FLTSIM5\).
  • Left click advanced button at bottom, make sure top two boxes are checked. ("prevent DOS programs from seeing Windows", and "suggest DOS mode as necessary").

Presto! FS5 runs perfectly out of Win95 with a simple double click. You can load windows panel switchers, sound switchers, and Flight Shop stuff into the same folder, and quickly switch panels & sounds for different planes.

PS: my frame rate is fine, but I'm lucky enough to have a 133mhz
